“ | We need to figure out the ins and outs of the Revival Book. How do people— how people die. How they react to dying. How you come back to life. Limbos... | ” |
—Punz to Tommy and Tubbo, while explaining his and Dream's motivations[1] |
The Revival Book is a book containing information on how to revive people after they have lost all three of their canon lives and have gone to limbo. It was created by DreamXD along with the Book of Death and dropped into the world a millennium ago. Dream and Punz are the only ones who have the knowledge from the book. The Revival Book was involved in several conflicts as other people unsuccessfully tried to obtain the power of revival for themselves.
Features[]
Revival and conditions[]
To revive somebody, certain text has to be written in a book. The book should then be burned in lava. It is unknown what has to be written in the book for the revival to work. One book can revive multiple people at once.[2] The person who is revived will have one canon life left, meaning that they will immediately die and go to limbo if they are killed again.[3] Trying to revive a person who is not dead summons DreamXD instead.[4] It is not possible to revive pets.[5]

Dream using the Revival Book
Not every revival has the same prerequisites. One way to revive somebody is by reviving them on the spot where they died.[6] Another method is by having their ghost nearby. The revival then "kills" the ghost and the revived person appears in the location where they originally died.[7] Revival can also work without being near the original death location and without having access to a ghost. The revived person will then appear where they were revived.[8] It is unclear what the conditions for this are.
Knowledge[]
While performing tests with the Revival Book, Dream and Punz found out that everyone's limbo is dependent on how they die and what happens to them before they die. If somebody is revived and then dies again, their limbo will be different. Furthermore, Dream and Punz learned about the existence of another dimension, the End, and about DreamXD. They also discovered that mind control is a mechanic on the server and that there are people who developed certain powers, like Ranboo and Foolish.[9]
Book of Death[]
The Book of Death works the opposite way of the Revival Book. It is a book that can kill whoever's name is written in it, though it will also kill the owner of the book at the same time. However, the owner of the Book of Death is unable to use it to kill the owner of the Revival Book, as the books are considered counters to each other.[10]
Cost[]
Using revival too many times has the potential to upset the balance of the world. An imbalance between life and death causes problems in the End and a corruption in the rest of the world. Dream and Punz were worried that the imbalance may make DreamXD decide to end the entire world.[11]
History[]
Creation[]
A millennium ago, DreamXD watched Death Note and thought it would be a fun game to create a death book and a revival book.[12][13] He made both the Book of Death and the Revival Book and left them in different locations on the server for people to find.[12]
Discovery[]
Sometime before November 6, 2020, Jschlatt found the Revival Book. He gave it to Dream in exchange for Dream helping him defend Manberg in the upcoming war with Pogtopia.[14] Dream agreed, considering the book to be the most valuable thing on the server.[15] After receiving the Revival Book, Dream became paranoid that other people might also have the means of revival. This meant that he might not be able to stop a powerful person with death, as they would just come back. To resolve this, Dream commissioned Sam to build him a prison on December 4, 2020, so that he could lock this potential person up instead.[16][17] After memorizing the book's contents, Dream burned it.[18]
Secret experiments[]

Dream and Punz experimenting with the Revival Book
At a certain point before January 20, 2021, Dream shared the knowledge from the Revival Book with Punz and discussed how they could test whether the book worked. Punz was worried that others would notice if they just started killing people, and Dream added that the person they would test it on had to stay dead after the experiments. They decided to test the book on Vikkstar and LazarBeam, since they would not be missed if they disappeared. After capturing them, Dream and Punz took Vikk and Lazar to a secret location where they killed and revived them for months, killing them in every way they could think of. Vikk and Lazar were then permanently killed to keep the existence of the Revival Book secret.[19][20]

Dream revealing the Revival Book during the Disc Confrontation
When Dream realized that the server had started turning against him, he got concerned that he and Punz might lose in a fight against everyone and permanently die. To avoid this, Dream wanted to separate Punz from himself by having him become responsible for locking Dream up in the prison. That way, nobody would think they had to kill both Dream and Punz at the same time to kill one of them.[21]
Dream and Punz staged the Disc Confrontation on January 20, 2021, where Punz supposedly betrayed Dream by leading most of the server members to his location. Tommy killed Dream twice and was about to kill him a third time when Dream revealed the existence of the Revival Book. The server decided to imprison Dream in Pandora's Vault in case they needed him to revive somebody, just like Dream and Punz had planned.[22]

Tommy after his revival
On February 21, 2021, Tommy was trapped with Dream in the prison after Ranboo had set off TNT on the roof, causing a security issue.[23][24] Nine days later, Tommy and Dream got in a fight about whether the Revival Book was real. Since Tommy kept insisting that he did not believe it actually existed, Dream killed Tommy to prove to him that the book was real.[25] Sam and Quackity then planned to kill Dream, but Sam changed his mind when he remembered that Dream still possessed the Revival Book.[26] Three days after Tommy's death, Dream revived him and Tommy was let out of the prison soon after.[27][28]
Following Tommy's revival, Schlatt's ghost contacted Quackity and told him about the Revival Book. He asked if Quackity could obtain the book and revive him. Quackity proposed a bet where he would get the Revival Book from Dream and give it to Schlatt if Schlatt won, but if Schlatt lost then he would not get revived and would have to work for Quackity forever.[29]

Quackity and Sam discussing the plan to get the Revival Book
Although Quackity won this bet,[30] he still intended to obtain the Revival Book for himself. Quackity offered to Sam that he would torture Dream to get the Revival Book from him. Sam ended up agreeing and gave Quackity his weapons and shears which Quackity took into the cell with Dream. He ordered Dream to give him the knowledge from the book, but Dream refused. Quackity then took out his weapons and vowed to visit Dream every single day to torture him until Dream would give up the Revival Book.[31]
On April 29, 2021, Tommy wanted to kill Dream by following invisibly behind Ghostbur as he visited Dream. However, Sam spotted Tommy before he could attack Dream and made him leave the cell while Ghostbur stayed behind. This led to Dream taking Ghostbur hostage and threatening to revive Wilbur if he was not let out of the prison. As Sam refused to let him go, Dream revived Wilbur in the hope that Wilbur would help him escape.[32]

Dream using the Revival Book on Techno
After Technoblade got trapped in the cell with Dream, Dream wondered what would happen if he tried to revive a living person. Techno agreed for Dream to use the Revival Book on him, thinking that it might create clones of him who could protect Dream from Sam and Quackity. When Dream used the book on Techno, DreamXD was summoned to the cell. Techno asked DreamXD for a wish, which DreamXD granted. Dream became upset when Techno then wished for a bell instead of wishing for a way for them to escape.[33]
A few months later on September 14, 2021, Quackity visited Dream and Techno to try to get the Revival Book for the last time. Quackity threatened to kill Techno if Dream did not give him the book, but Dream kept repeating that he would not give it to him. Right before Quackity was about to kill him, Techno was teleported out of the cell by Philza.[34] Sam and Quackity left the cell to search for Techno. When they returned to the cell, it appeared that Dream had escaped as well.[35]
Sam later found Dream hiding in the cell's toilet. Dream begged Sam not to tell Quackity that he was still in the cell, as he was afraid that Quackity would kill him. Sam pressed Dream on why he would not just give them the Revival Book, and Dream replied that he knew either Sam or Quackity would kill him if he did so. Sam denied this and said that he would just let Dream stay in the cell or would revive Dream if Quackity killed him. Dream did not believe Sam and called him a liar. In the end, Sam reluctantly agreed not to tell Quackity that Dream had not escaped.[36]
Las Nevadas[]
That same day, Quackity rushed to Las Nevadas to inform everyone of Dream's supposed escape. He and Slimecicle planned to gather all Las Nevadas citizens when they ran into Purpled. Purpled lured them into a trap and mentioned Quackity's prison visit, demanding that Quackity hand over the Revival Book or he would kill him. Quackity insisted that he did not have the book and got into a fight with Purpled. When Quackity said that he would not give the book to Purpled even if he did have it, Purpled ended up killing Slimecicle.[37]
Post-prison[]

Dream and Foolish talking about the Revival Book
After Dream was broken out of prison by Techno, several others expressed interest in the Revival Book. Sapnap asked Dream about it when Dream told him that Quackity had tortured him for the book, although Dream just replied that it was a long story.[38] Foolish also discussed the Revival Book with Dream, wondering whether Dream ever thought of giving it away and what would happen if Dream died. Dream said he would rather keep the book himself and that he had certain assurances in place if he did somehow die.[39]
In the meantime, Dream secretly returned to the prison and took it as his base.[40] He and Punz continued their research on the Revival Book, performing tests and experiments to find out all of the world's knowledge. They killed each other and themselves to learn more about different limbos. At some point, Dream and Punz built a new room in the prison where they intended to run an experiment to find out what kind of limbo somebody would have if they died while being selfless. They also found out about the imbalance they had caused with too many revivals, and planned to kill everyone who refused to join them to balance the world again.[41]
The final plan[]

Punz reviving Dream
A while after Wilbur had left the server to return to Utah, Tommy decided to kill Dream as he had found out that Dream lived in the prison. He contacted Tubbo, who agreed with him that the power of revival was not worth keeping Dream alive anymore since Wilbur was gone.[42] On November 11, 2022, Tommy and Tubbo went into the prison to ambush Dream. After a drawn-out fight, Tubbo was able to kill Dream and take his final life. Tommy and Tubbo told Punz about how they had killed Dream, but Punz led them into a trap where he revived Dream in front of them.[43] Dream and Punz took Tommy and Tubbo to Pandora's Vault when they got to half a heart and begged for their lives.[44]
In Pandora's Vault, Tommy and Tubbo were forced to hand over everything from their inventories and ender chests. Dream and Punz took Tommy and Tubbo to the limbo experiment room they had built. They explained why they had staged the Disc Confrontation and what they had found out by experimenting with the Revival Book. After revealing their plan to kill everyone who did not join them, Dream told Tommy and Tubbo about the purpose of the room. They had to choose which one of them would die while the other would be able to escape. After Dream and Punz left the room, Tommy decided to sacrifice his discs instead, and both he and Tubbo managed to escape the prison.[45]

Tommy in limbo
Tommy and Tubbo came up with a plan to use one of Tubbo's nukes to kill Dream and Punz at the same time. The next day, Tommy went into the prison to keep Dream and Punz together while Tubbo prepared the nuke. Tommy discussed Dream's motivations with him as he tried to stall for time. He ended up asking how Dream could talk about death like it was nothing, leading to Dream killing Tommy to emphasize that death meant nothing. In limbo, Tommy saw Dream with his friends at the beginning of the server. He was then revived and explained that he finally understood how Dream had just wanted friends, which was also what Tommy wanted. Just when Dream wondered if they could maybe work together, the sirens of the nuke sounded and the nuke hit the prison.[46]
Server reset[]
- Main article: The Incident
Shortly before the events of Project Early Dawn, Eret met with Foolish in their museum. Eret told Foolish about their plan to hunt down Dream and take the Revival Book from him to protect the rest of the server. However, Foolish said that fighting over the Revival Book was pointless since DreamXD would just undo anything they did. They then gathered a group of people and went to fight DreamXD in the End so that Foolish could take his powers. This distracted DreamXD so much that he decided to reset the server after the Egg had hatched during the Egg Conflict and the nuke from Project Early Dawn had gone off at the same time.[47]
