—Karl, writing in his diary about time-traveling. |
Karl Jacobs, shortened to Karl, is the twenty-first member of the Dream SMP, joining on August 26, 2020. Karl currently serves as the leader of Kinoko Kingdom and resides in the realm with many allies and friends. He is a time traveler who is sent to different destinations in different periods of time. Due to time travel, he suffers with severe memory loss.
He was formally an ambassador to the Dream SMP faction, Creative Head Director/Vice-Vice-President of L'Manberg under the Tubbo Administration, and a citizen of El Rapids.
Physiology[]
Karl appears as a human with brown hair, light skin, and light brown eyes. He wears a multi-colored hoodie with a teal spiraling swirl, black pants, and purple shoes. However, as of recent, his hoodie and eyes seem to be changing colors due to his time traveling.
During The Village That Went Mad, Karl wore a puffy multi-colored jacket with a pocket watch and goggles. During The Beach Episode, Karl wore a button-down multi-colored shirt with flower designs, purple sandals, and sunglasses. In The Masquerade, Karl retained his original casual attire and a purple mask to fit the theme, the same for The Wild West (cowboy hat) and The Pit (goggles). In The Maze, Karl wore a cream-colored shirt, blue overalls, and goggles.
In the Inbetween, Karl wears a white and light grey stylized version of his casual attire. In the Other Side, he wears a black and grey stylized version of his casual attire. His outfit in DreamXD's world is a combined version of both, split down the middle.
Karl has no control over when or where he time travels, more being thrown through time with little to no working and being tasked with recording what he sees. The portal in his library seems to be a sort of respawn point where he comes back to after traveling. When traveling back from each journey, he loses memories bit by bit and has to document his adventures in multiple diary entries.
Personality[]
Karl is a friendly, funny, and positive guy that loves hanging out with his friends. He is engaged to Sapnap. He was also formerly engaged to Quackity simultaneously, making it the first polyamorous relationship of the SMP. He is known for building and taking credit for constructing several landmarks around the server.
Karl also acts as a tour guide for new visitors and members, giving tours to LazarBeam, Vikkstar123, Pokimane, Lil Nas X and Corpse Husband.
History[]
L'Manberg Independence Arc[]
Karl joined Dream SMP on August 26, 2020. Right off the bat, he was welcomed by members of the server with a tour and was given many items to start with. Karl built Hutt's Pizza on his first day on the server with the help of Eret and Punz.[1] Karl wanted to join L'Manberg, but was rejected by Tommy since Karl was not British.[6] Karl built his floating bamboo house next to Tommy's house just to annoy him.[7]
L'Manberg civil conflict[]
- Main article: L'Manberg civil conflict
On August 31, 2020, Fundy stole Karl's netherite ingot after Eret dropped it on the floor to gift to Karl.[8] Karl was upset by this action, leading to him and Tubbo retaliating against Fundy two days later by griefing his base and stealing two valuable items from Fundy, the Long Schlong and The Drip, starting a conflict between L'Manbergians. Although Fundy regained possession of The Drip quickly, Tubbo still held the Long Schlong and refused to return it until Fundy returned Karl's netherite ingot. The conflict was eventually settled through multiple rounds of negotiations. In the end, Karl got a netherite chestplate enchanted with Mending and 223 durability in return for a signed book promoting Twitch Prime for Fundy.[9]
Engaging Sapnap[]
Karl became engaged to Sapnap on September 14, 2020. The same day, he began work on a wedding chapel to the Harry Potter house for their marriage.[10] On September 21, he built the Eiffel Tower with Sapnap and Punz for the honeymoon.[11]
Election[]
- Main article: SWAG2020 vs POG2020 Election
During the SWAG2020 vs POG2020 election cycle, Karl was a supporter SWAG2020.[12] Despite supporting SWAG2020, Karl was chosen as the moderator of the L'Manberg Presidential Debate since he was considered the most neutral on at the time.[13]
Manberg Rebellion Arc[]
Party Island[]
Prior to Pokimane's visit, Karl, Quackity, and Fundy created Party Island as a welcome to the Dream SMP in Manberg territory. During its construction Karl implied that he would die for Manberg, clearly showing where his allegiances lie in this conflict. Later on Party Island would be used as an example by Schlatt to show how much nicer Manberg’s new builds are as opposed to the former L'Manberg's architecture, as well as seemingly confirming Karl as a citizen of Manberg.[1]
Manberg Festival[]
- Main article: Manberg Festival
While helping Tubbo decorate for the Manberg Festival, Karl told Tubbo that he would join whatever political party Tubbo was a part of. Tubbo then gave him a place as Secretary of The Fence in Schlatt's cabinet. Later on in a conversation With Wilbur and Tubbo, Karl essentially confirmed he was now a part of Manberg after Wilbur gave him his blessing to join(even though Wilbur acknowledged that he had no power to do so).
Niki's Birthday Party[]
Karl decided to hold Niki a birthday party at the Haunted Mansion they built together and whilst he and Niki made a cake, Skeppy and Bad called people up and told them to come otherwise Niki would cry, much to her protests. Everyone went outside and began to party properly together. Karl gave Niki her birthday present which was Quackity stripping, singing and dancing on the table in front of her. Everyone left, leaving Karl with Niki, Quackity and Wilbur where they hung out together for a bit. Quackity sung Wilbur a song, which is where the party suddenly went sour as Wilbur insulted everyone and said he was going to blow up Manberg. Karl eventually chased after Wilbur after Niki and Quackity. Wilbur asked to sing Niki a song, and then began to sing the L'Manberg Anthem to her. Karl was visibly scared and began searching for the button room whilst Wilbur was dissuaded by Quackity. Karl and Niki were left on Party Island together where they had a short disagreement on whether to call it L'Manberg or Manberg before she thanked him for the party.
Rutabagville[]
- Main article: Rutabagville
After Karl built the Haunted Mansion, he built a winter town in the mountains with Niki. Days later after taming his cat, Rutabaga, Karl decided to form his own nation with the winter town and named it Rutabagville. After seeing what Dream had while preparing for the Manberg vs Pogtopia War, Karl decided to join/rejoin Manberg, secretly making Rutabagville a district of the nation. On the day of the war, Karl revealed the annexation to Niki, who was disappointed in Karl upon hearing the news and chose to renounce her citizenship to Rutabagville due to its newly-formed ties with Manberg.
Manberg vs Pogtopia War/Chaos War[]
Initially, Karl took the side of Dream SMP and Manberg during the Manberg vs Pogtopia War. Before the war, Karl spoke to many members and was saddened by the fact that all his friends were fighting for the Pogtopian cause. Karl overheard Eret's conversation with Tubbo and Quackity where he stated that he would betray Dream SMP and relayed the information to Dream, leading to Dream dethroning Eret. During the war, Karl mostly spoke with Schlatt atop the tower and was killed multiple times after the Pogtopian offensive started. After all the fighting ended and Manberg declared loss, Karl immediately flipped and pretended to be in Pogtopia's side the entire time.
Despite this defection, Karl would flip sides once again and join Team Chaos after a second round of fighting broke out, only for him to flip once more after Techno spawned in 2 withers. Tubbo and the other members of Pogtopia accepted Karl, giving him the position of Creative Head Director in L'Manberg.
Retribution Arc[]
Mexican L'Manberg/El Rapids[]
- Main article: El Rapids
After Quackity formed Mexican L'Manberg, Karl joined him in the new nation while keeping the position as Creative Head Director of L'Manberg. Karl was essential to the plot for Mexican L'Manberg to be recognized by sacrificing one of his canon lives in an attempt to frame Eret. After many negotiations in the holy land, Mexican L'Manberg was recognized as its own nation under a new name, El Rapids. There was also an attempt to return one canon life to Karl, but the idea was rejected.
Empowerment Arc[]
The Egg[]
- Main article: The Egg
One day BadBoyHalo decided to show Quackity the Egg. Karl spied on the two from a distance and followed them to the Egg room. He tried to get Quackity to leave by promising him a gift, and out of fear of the Egg, Quackity ran away. As Bad and Quackity were arguing, Karl mined down and hit Bad with a stick then ran away.
Kinoko Kingdom[]
After the events of the Masquerade, Karl was told that he could no longer keep his library in the same location, as the safety of the library was compromised. Karl decided to officially leave El Rapids, making the nation essentially defunct. With George and Sapnap, they created a new nation, although they didn't pick a name for it at the time. The first building Karl wanted to build was the library.
Sometime after the events of the Wild West, he awoke at his old abandoned library to find it overrun by the blood vines. Understanding what the mysterious book writer in the Inbetween meant by moving the library, he went to improve his new country, which he named Kinoko Kingdom.
In the fourth Las Nevadas stream, Karl was first seen coming up from the ladder leading to his secret library, where he reunited with Quackity as Sapnap had brought him to visit the country. Karl initially treated the visit civilly like Quackity was a stranger, but things started to spiral after he suddenly pulled Sapnap aside to tell him Quackity was apparently the reason he had died. In spite of Sapnap and Quackity trying to remind him of their shared past, Karl revealed that he had no recollection of Quackity nor their history together outside of the claim of murder, and accused Quackity of being a "terrorizing murderer" who contradicted the peaceful values of Kinoko. Karl then told Sapnap, also Kinoko's Head of Military, to remove Quackity from the premises of the nation and effectively placed a restraining order against him.
Tales from the SMP[]
- Main article: Tales from the SMP
Somehow, as of recent, Karl has been randomly time traveling inside of his library. He keeps on losing his memory, and seems to want to figure out how he can make the history of the server better.
The Town That Never Was[]
- Main article: Tales from the SMP/The Town That Never Was
Karl, alongside Sam, Bad, George, and Fundy, built a nation dubbed "Gogtopia" in one hour. Before the one hour was up, a raid occurred, which Karl described as the first war. After this, Karl blew up the country using nearly a stack of TNT, renaming it to "The Town That Never Was." He proclaimed that he wanted the moment to remain as a beautiful memory without it being used as leverage against its creators.
The Village That Went Mad[]
- Main article: Tales from the SMP/The Village That Went Mad
Karl time-traveled hundreds of years in the past, where he watched as a village called "Not A Very Good Town Town" and its 8 townsfolk tried to figure out who the murderer was. It ended with Cornelius, Helga, Miles and Jimmy being murdered, with Catboy and Robin being executed. Both of the murderers, Jack and Bob, remained alive.
The Beach Episode[]
- Main article: Tales from the SMP/The Beach Episode
Karl challenged Dream, Sapnap, George, Bad and Ranboo to a treasure hunt made by a pirate named "Captain Blockbeard." The winner of this treasure hunt was Ranboo, who was given multiple items. Ranboo gave a graphics card (RTX 3080) to Sapnap, since Ranboo already had a better one (RTX 3090), and the rest of the participants were also gifted twenty subs.
The Lost City of Mizu[]
- Main article: Tales from the SMP/The Lost City of Mizu
Isaac (Karl), alongside Benjamin, Charles and Cletus, who were a group of four fisherman, found and explored an underwater city named Mizu. The city had only one resident; a descendant of Ranboo named Ranbob. It contained multiple events from the 'Disc Wars', however a lot of the information was often incorrect due to the time difference.
During the visit, Ranbob murdered Cletus in the Tree Dome room, and Benjamin fell into lava after nearly completing some parkour. Isaac and Charles find a room dedicated to Dream, and after Ranbob states that Dream was his idol, he murders Charles and then Isaac.
Karl returned to the present to document his adventures, and wrote a diary entry stating that he was starting to experience memory issues after time traveling. After some internal conflict, Karl concludes that he has to keep traveling in order to "right some wrongs."
The Masquerade[]
- Main article: Tales from the SMP/The Masquerade
Karl time traveled over a hundred years in the past in front of a mansion, where he meets Sir Billiam III, the owner of the mansion. After learning that Karl is a Minecraft streamer, he lets him in and waits for the other guests to arrive. When they all arrive, they party for a while until the lights go out.
Whilst the lights are out, a murder occurs, and the party-goers attempt to find the murderer - although they aren't that successful as most of the party-goers end up dead. Billiam reveals to Karl that the Egg was the one controlling everyone to kill each other, and invites Karl to hug the Egg. When Karl refuses, Billiam orders his butler to kill Karl.
Following this series of events, Karl ends up in the Inbetween, a white palace that seems to transcend time. It is described as a gateway for traveling in time. He is told that he does not get to choose when he time travels or when he returns, but that there is a solution for his body's deterioration hidden somewhere within the castle. Finally, he is advised to move his library, and he traveled back to the present.
Karl began documenting his adventures at the masquerade party. Afterward, he began writing in his diary again, talking about the Inbetween and how he plans to move the library so that it can be preserved.
The Wild West[]
- Main article: Tales from the SMP/The Wild West
Karl traveled to approximately the same period as the Masquerade, and arrives at a bar that was being robbed by a group of three bandits. He gathers the townspeople in order to fight against the bandits. Karl and the townspeople successfully fought off the bandits.
Karl then once again ended up at the Inbetween. This time, there were multiple different Karls walking throughout the castle. The castle was described as constantly growing and adapting, and explains that not all stories have to end in misery. Karl also found another book demanding he looked under the tree. After he did so, he found a book warning him not to deter from the path.
The Haunted Mansion[]
- Main article: Tales from the SMP/The Haunted Mansion
Karl traveled to a time in the future, and arrives next to a good friend of his, Connor. Confused to see Connor, he walks into the house Connor was having a hangout in, and met Connor's new friends. He traveled with them to the mansion ran by Schlatt, and completed the trials. He seemed to have felt uneasy about some of the guests, as they acted a bit weird towards him.
Karl once again traveled to the Inbetween, and goes around the castle. He finds new rooms such as a bathroom, bedroom, and a new hallway. He reads several books that attempt to comfort Karl during his visitation to the castle. At one point however, Karl finds a secret room hidden within a tree. He finds books that warn Karl of the dangers of the Inbetween, stating that the dimension was not as innocent as it seemed and that the portal was the key. He then finds fourteen more books outside the tree that insisted that Karl did not stray from the path.
The Pit[]
- Main article: Tales from the SMP/The Pit
Karl traveled to the same time period as the Lost City of Mizu, and ended up in an empire ruled by a king. The king made citizens duel to be the general, while others watched. Karl was the cameraman for the king, however he had lost all of the footage. After this, the winner of the duels killed Karl, ending his travel.
Karl ended up in the Inbetween once again, but this time things were different. Karl kept teleporting throughout the Inbetween, and the dimension got progressively darker as Karl continued to ignore the books telling him to not stray from the path. Eventually, he listened to the books that were telling him to go to the portal he had seen from his previous travel. He went through the portal after much difficulty and ended up in a new dimension, the Other Side.

Name | Notes |
Neutral/positive
|
Awesamdude and Karl have a neutral relationship due to their friendly personalities. |
Positive
|
Of the times that Karl and Connor have interacted, they have been on good terms. When Karl arrives at the cabin Connor rents out for his "unpopular friends" during The Haunted Mansion, he greets Karl excitedly, saying he's glad to see him. Karl returns the sentiment, happy to see someone that he recognizes from the SMP in his travels. The two express this same sentiment a couple more times throughout the tale, as Connor seems to know Karl much better than the rest of the cast, excluding Schlatt. |
Opposed | Karl also hates the Egg as when Bad tried to lure Quackity to be corrupted, he was chatting to Quackity to get out of there and has also hit Bad with a stick for trying to lure Quackity and left a threatening note. This was also most likely increased in the Masquerade episode as he and the other guests have been killed by Sir Billiam and the Butler as a "sacrifice" and to "feed" the Egg much like what happened during the Red Banquet. |
Neutral/positive
|
Eret and Karl have a positive relationship with each other. Eret often helps Karl out with his builds. However, after the events of El Rapid's attempt to dethrone Eret, their relationship may have soured. |
Positive
|
Karl and Foolish have interacted due to Karl asking for help to build his new library in Kinoko Kingdom. The two and Sapnap bonded over their work, and have had good relations with each other since. |
Positive
|
George and Karl have a long history of joking with each other, and they often hang out. They have since grown their relationship, as Karl gave George custom yeezys. |
Neutral
|
Karl gave Lazar a tour when Lazar first joined the server. After the tour, they jokingly messed with each other with Lazar blowing up Karl and Karl threatening to kill Lazar by Punz. They are neutral at the moment. |
Neutral/positive
|
Karl and Niki have a warm relationship, as they went on a date together and have had several positive interactions. Although Karl sold Rutabagaville to Manberg and was on the opposite side in the Manberg vs Pogtopia War, they remained good friends. |
Positive
|
Prior to Pokimane's visit, Karl built Party Island, Pokimane War Bunker, and Party Park to impress her. When she visited the server on December 13, 2020, Karl gave her a tour, showing the main regions of Dream SMP and portions of L'Manberg before revealing Party Island and Party Park. |
Positive
|
Karl and Punz have a positive relationship and often hang out with each other, Karl likes to say that Punz and Sapnap fight over him. |
Positive
|
Purpled defended Karl when George and Quackity tried hunting him. |
Very negative
|
Quackity is one of Karl's two fiances. During the election, Karl leaned towards SWAG2020 since they allowed free travel and building. As a result, Karl was able to take on multiple projects in Manberg. Karl and Quackity have spent some time building and having fun together in Manberg.
In the Tubbo Administration, the two bonded more in the cabinet. Their relationship allowed Karl to become a member of El Rapids. Karl forgot to tell Quackity about Kinoko kingdom, most likely because of his traveling memory issues, leading to Quackity feeling somewhat abandoned by him and Sapnap. Due to his memory issues, Karl only remembers Quackity as the person who got him killed, and believes him to be a terrorizing murderer. Upon realizing this, Quackity reacted with hurt and anger, and told Sapnap he didn't care about Karl. |
Partner
|
Karl is engaged with Sapnap. Even though Sapnap has made Karl question their relationship a few times over Sap's actions, the two are still a happy couple seeking marriage. Their relationship has since expanded to include Quackity. Though that was changed due to Karl forgetting Quackity as a result of his memory issues. The two of them are also very protective of each other.[22] |
Neutral
|
Tommy and Karl have a neutral relationship, but Karl often annoys Tommy. Karl was slightly upset with Tommy since he griefed the Eiffel Tower, but helped Tommy in expanding the Underground Prime Path. Later on, while Karl was enthusiastic about Tommy being exiled[23], it is unknown whether this feeling has persisted or changed afterwards. |
Positive
|
Karl and Tubbo have a positive relationship. Their relationship grew stronger as Tubbo granted Karl a position in his cabinet. |
Quotes[]
- "I don't think I do, if all it does is cause death."
- "The Inbetween. A place I don't quite understand. I feel like I've been there before but I can't put my finger on it."
- "I can't keep losing my memory. And it seems like every time I go to the Inbetween it happens, but I can't just stop going. Maybe there's more to that place that I'm unaware of... I have to keep looking deeper and deeper into the Inbetween so I can find my way to ensure that i don't lose everyone that's so close to me."
- "Don't forget who you are."
- "Sapnap... that guy down there's the reason I died."
- "WHAT HISTORY?"
Trivia[]
- Karl sided with Manberg in the Manberg vs Pogtopia War, but always said that he was on Pogtopia's side since the beginning.
- Karl enjoys being in animatics and sometimes goes out of his way by saying one-liners in hopes of getting into them. However, since Season 2, this seems to be no longer the case, as the line between fiction and meta, i.e. the Fourth Wall, starts to solidify during this time.
- In The Lost City of Mizu, Karl revealed that he was a time traveler, which led many people to suspect that Karl changed things that happened on the server. One idea that is heavily suspected is that he broke Wilbur's TNT button as he said in a very confusing tweet on October 16 that stated, "Hi everyone, I broke the button."
- This theory, however, is likely untrue, as Karl does not voluntarily choose what time he travels to.
- It is theorized that Dream knew about Karl's time-traveling abilities and made Pandora's Vault specifically for him.
- Each time he time travels, he loses some of his memory.
- Karl has died on the Dream SMP around 415 times, making him the member to die the most, right after Quackity.
